From March 11 to 13, 2011 at the Milano City Expo center, comic lovers and first time visitors cannot miss this event attended by countless publishers with a rich market exhibit and the possibility of expanding their collections with rare collection series.
The expo is not just comics as it features sections on all types of collectibles with a repertory to satisfy even the most demanding visitor. The world of animation, video games and merchandising are also well represented to provide a complete panorama on what is increasingly becoming a true art form that attracts growing crowds of fans.
FASHION is the key theme of this year’s edition of Cartooncomics as an homage to Milan, by tradition regarded as a world fashion and design capital. An exhibition held at Fondazione Franco Fossati, featuring original drawings and rare items, will depict the evolution of fashion and comics through history.
A section – especially meant for adults – entitled Les Dessous de La Femme features women’s underwear as illustrated in the artwork of such comics masters as Guido Crepax, Leone Frollo, Roberto Baldazzini, Giuseppe Manunta, Giovanna Casotto and Nick Guerra.
The CosplayCity is one of the main areas of the three-day show. Enthusiasts come from all parts of Italy to take part in the cosplay contest in which they don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character – often drawn from popular fiction – or idea.
Visitors at Cartoomics have the unique chance to meet representatives from the various publishing houses, from the largest to the smallest, admire the theme exhibits and meet the guest artists and authors with their works. Most popular national cartoonists from various comic genres are due to attend the show. Visitors have the opportunity to meet the popular satirist Vauro, the artists of the Bonelli line including Giampiero Casertano, Claudio Villa, Paolo Bisi, Lola Airaghi, Luca Enoch, Giuseppe Montanari, Lorenzo Bartoli, Diego Cajelli, Adriano Carnevali, Matteo Cremona, Andrea Domestici, Matteo Scalera (author of Tex, Spider-Man and Dampyr), Laura Scarpa (Linus, Orient Express, Corriere dei Piccoli, Mondo Naif), Fabio Visintin and many others.
This year a section is dedicated to Sandro Simeoni. The creator of countless popular movie posters – recently passed away – is celebrated in the exhibition DIPINGERE OLTRE LA CENSURA gathering about fifty of his artworks.
The section Angolo del Collezionista consists of a collectibles marketplace and hosts comics and antiques shops from various parts of Italy. The space Area Agorà features book launchs, debates, meetings and the Cartoomics awards, which go to great masters of the past and young promising talents.
This year there are a number of collateral events, the most appealing of which is “CARTOOMICS SPIN-OFF: HORROR & MOTION”. Held From 8 to 11 March at the Provincial Conference Centre in Via Corridoni, the event features a range of activities including screenings, meetings, book presentations and the participation of various special guests. The peak of the event on 10 March is “DDD - Dylan Dog Day”, a special party aiming to celebrate the 25 years of life of the famous comic book character created by Bonelli.
