Although St. Patrick (c. 387–461), a 5th century evangelist, was originally associated with the color blue, the holiday eventually grew to become less overtly religious and more of a secular celebration of all things Irish as Irish immigrants in the US began holding the first St. Patrick’s Day parades…and making everyone Irish for a day by encouraging the wearing o’ the green. Fueled in part by the fact that St. Patrick supposedly used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity in his missionary work, green is also one of the three colors (the other two are orange & white) in the Emerald Isle’s flag.
A cute green dress like this eyecatching lil’ number from Promgirl.net – a good resource for short dresses, flirty cocktail dresses & floorlength formal homecoming dresses – will not help you stand out in a sea of LBDs at night – whether you’re headed to a prom, an event, or just out to paint the town red (or, should it be St. Paddy’s, green). More importantly, it’s also good protection against getting pinched! This tradition was also started stateside by 18th century revelers who, apparently having had a few too many, decided that wearing green made them invisible to those mischievous gold-hoarding cobblers, the leprechauns; people then began pinching anyone not wearing the hue to remind them that they could now expect to be snuck up on by leprechauns and pinched (again).
And only a leprechaun would even think of trying to wear matching green shoes with a green dress. Since you’re not a green-clad fairy creature but a fashion pro, you already know to pair yours with chic metallic strappy heels & clutch (gold looks especially fabu with green), a statement necklace to show off your sexy decolletage, and a fun leopard-print topper.
